The ANC Cup event at Treble Cone this week follows the first of the series at Mount Hotham in Australia, with the grand final at Mt. Hutt on September 10 to 15.
Wanaka, New Zealand - Treble Cone ski area will host the prestigious Mapei Australia and New Zealand Cup this week, attracting top New Zealand and international ski racers. Over 75 men and 40 women will compete to better their world ranking and selection for the coming World Championships and Olympic Games.
Top alpine ski racing athletes from New Zealand and Australia will be joined by an international line up of athletes from a total of 15 nationalities in Slalom and Giant Slalom disciplines today and Friday.
The high level of talent will not only raise the level of competition, but assist the New Zealand competitors by providing a lower penalty. Athletes must have a maximum of 140 FIS points to be eligible to enter this event, which is run to strict Continental Cup standards.
“Such a talented international line up provides good training for the New Zealand National and Development Teams and New Zealand alpine ski racing academy athletes amongst a high profile international field," says Guenther Birgmann, Director of Treble Cone Snow Sports & Race Department. "It also provides athletes with the opportunity to lower their FIS points and world ranking in the lead up to the 2007/08 World Junior Championships, World Cup start ranking and national team criteria. The race arena on Big Skite and Main Street on Treble Cone’s Home Basin is shaping up well and will provide an excellent FIS homologated race course for Slalom and Giant Slalom disciplines, with good spectator viewing from Main Street.”
Top kiwi talent will include Mark Bridgewater from Christchurch, Lucy Tait-Jamieson of Auckland, Leighton Winslow of Wanaka, Tim Café of Queenstown and Ben Griffin of Ohakune, who have all been performing well in events leading up to this meet. Australian representative Matt Robertson, who presently trains with the Treble Cone Race Academy is also a high contender, along with fellow Australian Brenton Fetterplace.
International talent will include present World Cup overall champion Nicky Hosp from the Austrian National Women’s team, top Norwegian National team members Lars Myhrer (ranked number 19 in the world), Truls Ove Karlsen (5th in World Champs) and Bjarne Solbakken (four-time World Cup podium winner), Kilian Albrecht of Bulgaria, and U.S. Ski Team members Roger Brown and Warner Nickerson. Other international athletes from Austria, the United States, Norway, Bulgaria, Iceland, Korea, Japan, Slovakia, Switzerland and Slovenia will also compete in the event this week.

The Markby Cup will be awarded to the overall fastest male and the Raffills Cup will be awarded to the overall fastest female. Both cups were commissioned last year in honor of two Treble Cone founding directors, Ralph Markby and Murray Raffills.
