The South Island's top junior female soccer players took to the fields of Mt Hutt College during the first day of the South Island Youth Girls Soccer Tournament.
There are 10 teams competing in the tournament from as far north as Nelson and as far south as Southland, all of which enjoyed travelling to Methven, organiser Tony Wood said.
The teams are comprised of players competing in the 15th to 18th grades in the various regional tournaments.
Teams have been split into two pools of five, playing two games a day during pool play.
The tournament is being played over four days with pool play taking place yesterday and today and the finals on Saturday.
This is the third year the competition has been held at Mt Hutt College and despite the rain, the grounds held up very well.
"The grounds are in great condition . amazingly good," said Wood.
While there had been a couple of big scoring games, most of the matches were proving to be pretty even.
"We have had two large one-sided games but it's pretty even apart from that," Wood said.
In past tournaments Canterbury, Otago and Nelson have dominated, he said, adding they were not proving to be as strong during this year's competition.
Mid Canterbury has a squad of 15 participating in the tournament who should do quite well, Mid Canterbury Football Association regional development officer Gary Bennett said, adding most of the team had been playing together for about two years.
